GCSE Maths Paper 2: What to Revise for the Calculator Exam
First of all, a huge well done to all students (& parents or tutors!) for getting Paper 1 out of the way! Crossing that first finish line is a massive milestone. But as we all know, the GCSE journey is a marathon, not a sprint. Focus now shifts immediately to Paper 2, the first of the calculator papers.
I always tell my own students this week: nobody can predict exactly what a specific exam board will do. However, by looking at what already appeared on Paper 1 and analyzing years of past trends (in this case for Edexcel), we can be incredibly strategic about our revision.
If time is short, you cannot revise everything. Instead, you need to focus on the high-yield topics that regularly dominate Paper 2. Here is the exact roadmap I’ve given to my own students this week.
Foundation Tier: High-Yield Paper 2 Topics
Negative number calculator entry. It sounds simple, but I see brilliant students lose marks every single year simply because they don't know how their calculator processes data. When drawing graphs or substituting values, you must be incredibly careful with negative numbers.
The Rule: Always use brackets when squaring a negative number.
Enter it as (-4)² (which equals 16), not -4² (which your calculator will read as -16).
Geometry, Area, and Volume
Make sure you know exactly what is—and isn't—on your exam formula sheet. Do not waste time trying to memorize formulas that are given to you, but make sure you aren't caught short on the basics.
Given on the sheet: Volume of a prism, Area of a trapezium.
NOT given (You must know these!): Area of a triangle (0.5 x base x height), Area of a circle (pi x radius²).
Trigonometry: Spend time reviewing the distinct triggers for Pythagoras vs. SOHCAHTOA so you instantly know which tool to grab.
Number, Ratio, and Data Handling
Mean from a Table: This is a classic Paper 2 staple. When calculating it, don't just blindly trust the screen. Stop and sense-check your final answer—does it actually fit within the data range?
HCF and LCM: These frequently trip students up because the names confuse them. A strategy that always works for my students: write out a quick example of each using two different colored pens to visually separate the processes in your mind.
Financial Maths: Double-check your methods for Compound Interest and Simple Interest. These are tailor-made for calculator papers.
Higher Tier: High-Yield Paper 2 Topics
Advanced Trigonometry and Vectors
Trigonometry is traditionally a massive component of the Edexcel Higher Paper 2.
Make sure you are completely fluid with the Sine Rule, Cosine Rule, Area of a Triangle (0.5 x a x b x sin C), and Arc Length/Sector Area.
Watch out for the "Mash-Ups": Edexcel loves to blend trigonometry with algebra in the high-scoring second half of the paper (e.g., given the area of a non-right-angled triangle, calculate an algebraic length).
Review Vectors and Circle Theorems, particularly finding the equation of a tangent to a circle. These multi-step questions are worth huge marks.
Graphical Properties and Cumulative Frequency
Graph Recognition: Do you know what a cubic or reciprocal (y = 1/x) graph looks like at a glance? Spend 10 minutes creating a quick visual cheat sheet of graph shapes.
Data Interpretation: Practice drawing cumulative frequency curves and, more importantly, accurately reading the median and interquartile range (IQR) from them.
Probability and Algebraic Ratios
Algebraic Probability: Expect questions that combine algebraic expressions with probability trees. They require a steady hand and methodical working—don't rush the algebraic expansion.
Reverse Percentages: Focus heavily on compound interest questions where the original amount or the interest rate is missing, requiring you to set up and solve an algebraic equation.
How to Handle Your Revision This Week
Complete One Full Paper Under Exam Conditions
Don't just casually browse through questions. Sit down, set a timer, and do a past calculator paper properly. Mark it strictly, identify your top two weak areas, and spend your remaining time fixing those specific gaps. This targeted approach is infinitely more effective than aimless scrolling.
Attack the Multi-Step Worded Problems
The biggest separator between a good grade and a great grade on Paper 2 is the 4+ mark questions. These are the problem-solving questions where the math isn't explicitly stated—you have to decode the "story" to find the math.
